5PM LAKE EFFECT SNOW UPDATE
Right on cue, our lake effect snow band has gained some steam as it pushes through Chicago and is now southeast-bound towards the Region. We’re still not expecting a lot of snow with this, but a few inches are possible, especially if this band stalls for a few hours. First up–Lake and northern Newton counties. On and off bursts of snow with a quick visibility reduction will move in for that evening commute along 80/94 and I-65. Anything untreated will become snow-covered in this cold air while treated roads will become slick. Keep in mind, the band of snow is only about 10 miles wide, so it doesn’t take up a lot of real estate, but it will slowly move east bringing those bursts of snow into areas of Gary, Merrillville and Hobart over the next hour or so. Porter County will likely see this band move in a bit later this evening.
